My Outdoor Garden Grows Like A Weed In Summer

IMG_3836

Every year my garden starts off neatly raked and ready to go. By August, the almost daily Florida rains have everything growing so fast that if you blink the weeds take over. Look at my poor tree garden. Mowing is getting hard because I can’t tell where the garden starts and the lawn ends. We have had a lot of rain with hot muggy weather. It didn’t make me want to do anything outside. To make matters worse, my husband’s sliding glass office doors look out onto this mess. With a tropical storm making its way up the gulf side of the state, we have a little drier air. I decided to grab some yard time while I could. Here’s what it looked like after a few hours of dedicated weeding.

Ahhh, much better. It just goes to show that the weeds can overtake the best of intentions. You couldn’t even see the bricks before. Now I keep walking by the door and looking out because it makes me feel so good to see it cleaned up. I guess I am going to have to tackle the gardens around the edges of the yard next, but only if Hurricane Bill misses Florida next week. If not it will be time to batten down the hatches and ride it out. :0)

Outdoor Garden Fountains Create Ambiance

Ambiance – the mood, character, quality, tone, atmosphere, etc., particularly of an environment or milieu (Dictionary.com)

Bi-Level Jug Fountain With Planter

By the time you are shopping for an Outdoor Garden Fountain to add to your landscape, you have gone through most of the growing pains of developing a garden plan and establishing the foundation of your plantings.  A fountain is a major piece of your garden decor that deserves careful consideration.  Depending on your goal, your fountain will:

  • Become a focal point.  A larger fountain with appropriate seating will dominate its garden setting.  The mesmerizing sound and repetitive action of the water creates a garden ambiance of restful relaxation.  Many of my visitors have remarked about how sleepily relaxed they felt while conversing near my fountain.
  • Unobtrusively create atmosphere.  A small wall fountain creates depth to a garden.  Not only does it help to mask undesired noise, it remains in the background until the visitor finally notices and looks to see where it is.  As such, it can draw them into corners of your garden they would otherwise overlook.
  • Add life.  Especially during dry times, fountains draw birds and other wildlife to your yard.  Even if that isn’t one of your primary design goals, it is an added enduring benefit.

My Outdoor Garden Statues blog has had a longstanding relationship with the Garden Statue Shop.  My readers love statues and have enjoyed their catalog.  Now I am excited to bring an outstanding fountain company to you as well.  Garden-Fountains offers fountains to fit most any need.  They have designs that work in or outdoors, with different materials and in many different finishes.  Whether you prefer wall fountains, garden focal points or other water features, you will enjoy wandering through their site.

When you get a chance, stop back and let me know how you liked them.  I love to read your comments.

Introducing BottleTree.com

Every once in a while I add something to my Outdoor Garden Statue blog that is slightly off topic but well worth pursuing. I have been looking forward to today’s post because I think my readers will find many ways to display this product in their landscape and yes, I want you to share them with me. When I came across the BottleTree product, it struck a chord with me and I had to include it.

As a young girl in upstate New York, we had our share of gloomy winter days. When nothing much was growing outside, my grandmother’s porch was usually glowing with color. She collected glass bottles, jars and statues on her windowsill. When there was any light outside, they glowed and when the sun would shine, rainbows broke out. In my little eyes, it was wonderful .

As an adult, I know they were dust catchers and probably a pain to keep clean. but, there’s still a corner of my heart that revels in the sensation of light bursting through glass. Now, with Bottle Trees, I’ve found something even better. With their colorful trees, you can have the effect without the dust! Whether you choose a low one that holds the glass like big blossoms above a bed of greenery or a tall one that stands as a tree in its own right, they are guaranteed to become a conversation piece that brightens up a dull corner.

I haven’t seen these in stores. They are made in a family owned welding shop in a small-town right here in the U.S called Sunflower, MS. It’s in the heart of the South, the Mississippi Delta. As you know, when you buy something that’s made in the U.S.A. it’s good for the American economy. Also, because they aren’t a big operation, you can have something that is truly unique bringing attention to your favorite spot.
Why not visit the Bottle Tree site and then let me know what you think?

Large Garden Statues Require Careful Consideration

Wood Nymph Garden Statue on Tall Octagonal Pedestal

Anyone considering the purchase of a large garden statue is going to think long and hard before they make their purchase.  If it is really large, it won’t fit the United Parcel Service guidelines and will have to be shipped by common carrier.  That added to the initial cost of such a large purchase means you will definitely do your homework before placing your order.  It goes without saying that you need to purchase through a reliable dealer with a solid guarantee.  They should also be able to lead you through the different materials today’s statues are made from and what you can expect from each of them.  Use and care instructions should also be included with your purchase.  Look at it this way, any reputable dealer selling large garden statues knows the typical concerns of their customers.  If they can’t provide proper support, find someone else.

Large statues are by nature, their own focal point and have to be treated that way.  Giving careful consideration to their use and placement maximizes their effectiveness.  Adding them to an area that is too small or crowded with other distractions only dilutes their impact.  That is why you need a garden plan to showcase your centerpiece.

When planning the display area for your new statue, include spot lights.  Even if your statue isn’t on display after dark, well placed lights draw your eye toward it increasing it’s visual impact.  Other well placed garden lights increase safety without being a distraction.

You should also plan adequate seating near the statue.  It’s human nature to want to linger and appreciate a fine work of art.  Adding benches or other types of seating will allow your visitors to pause without obstructing traffic flow.  Benches also give parents room to rest with their children while keeping them away from your statue.  Such thoughtful touches create a welcoming atmosphere that increase returning visits.

Regarding traffic flow, well constructed garden paths do more than look great.  They keep visitors from compacting the ground in the planting area of your garden while directing them to the things you most want them to see.  After all the time, money and effort involved, it is a sad sight to see large garden statues that have been poorly displayed or even worse, forgotten.  Following these few tips will help you enjoy yours for many years to come.

Ready for Some Quirky Outdoor Statues?

This post is a serious departure from what I usually post but if you like outdoor statues, it’s worth pursuing.  I was playing with the search on my Twitter homepage and came across an entry for some unique statues.  Warning, some of them are a little crass and make you wonder why someone would make that.  However, there are some really wonderful ones.  I particularly like the Mother swinging her child in circles.  It really captures the essence of the motion in a stationary statue.

Why not take a break and check out the PictoVista: World’s Most Quirky Statues site?  I think you will enjoy it.
